Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS)

(also known as the Bureau of Export Administration)


Part of the Department of Commerce, BIS’ mission is, in part, to advance US national security by ensuring an effective export control system.

Lists comprising the BIS List:

  • Denied Persons List – Maintained by the Department of Commerce, consists of individuals and entities that have been denied export privileges through failure to comply with a BIS denial order
  • Unverified List – individuals and entities the BIS has been unable to verify the end-user in prior transactions. Those on this list become a “Red Flag” and should be resolved before conducting any further business (also maintained by the Department of Commerce)
  • Entity List – Foreign persons or entities subject to specific license requirements for the export, reexport or transfer of specified items (also maintained by the Department of Commerce)
